History of the ChurchNew Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church

Under the Leadership of the late Reverend Franklin C. Blackmon, Sr., the New Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church was organized. On July 6, 1980, Pastor Blackmon and congregation moved into their new location at 1617 North Gay Street. There was much renovation that needed to be done. Trustee Dutton built the choir stand with help from members. Mrs. Delores Custis Dutton donated draperies and the four (4) Deacons donated the pulpit. A new organ and piano were purchased and placed into the edifice.

The same Sunday, on July 6, New Pleasant Grove’s first worship service was held with One Hundred Forty-Four members. In 1982, two members were licensed to preach, the late Brother Nathaniel Johnson and Jay W. Watty.

The Lord continued to bless New Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church and on the first Sunday in January 1983 the congregation moved into a larger edifice, the present location at 3300 Elmora Ave. On May 17, 1986, God called Reverend Franklin C. Blackmon, Sr., from his earthly labor to his heavenly home. He departed this temporary life to an eternal life.

The New Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church without a pastor, continued to press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Jesus Christ, under the watchful eye and loving care of Reverend Dr. Clifford M. Johnson, Jr., now Bishop Johnson and Pastor of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and Ministries. After praying, searching, and listening to God under the directives of Pastor Johnson, the Officers and members voted to elect the Reverend Robert L. Haynes as Pastor. On February 25, 1987, Reverend Haynes accepted the Pastorship.

As part of the body of Christ and with God’s blessing, New Pleasant Grove continued to praise the Lord while worshipping, reaching,NPG Members teaching, evangelizing, and increasing our knowledge of Christ under the Pastorship of Reverend Robert L. Haynes. All honor, glory and praise unto our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The congregation realized many accomplishments spiritually, financially, and physically.

Thanks be to God, for the Lord gave the increase as many ministries were established including: liquidated a mortgage, renovated the sanctuary, kitchen and dining area, purchased additional property, built a baptismal pool, added parking space, and installed a modern ladies restroom.

God has been faithful for the past thirty years. To God Be the Glory. Being guided by the Holy Spirit of God, the covenant of His Word and the visionary leaders, the late Reverend Dr. Franklin C. Blackmon, Sr., (organizer) and Reverend Dr. Robert L. Haynes, the work of the ministry continued to be performed and perfected.

During Pastor Haynes’ visionary leadership, many exciting and God glorifying events occurred. The church family grew numerically and spiritually. Many ministries were born during this time of nurturing and Christian development. The Wednesday Night Bible Study (WNBS), Sunday Morning Bible Study (SMBS), Master Life Class, and the Disciple’s Prayer Life Class are some of the highlights of Pastor Haynes ministries. Also, the implementation of the Steering Committee, Evangelism Through Storytelling Ministry, and the Christian Education Ministry were beacons of lights shinning and bringing forth the glory of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. The former pastor and organizer’s wife and daughter remain to be faithful members, as well as many charter members.

Sister Brenda P. Haynes, the pastor’s lovely wife and other ministries added to this local assembly as being on the cutting edge of spiritual and academic enrichment. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of  love, and of a sound mind.” II Timothy 1:7.

On January 4, 2009, Pastor Robert Haynes resigned as pastor of the New Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. The church again found themselves without a pastor. As predestined by God, Bishop Clifford M. Johnson assumed the responsibility of overseeing the search for a new pastor. Under the leadership of God, Deacon Joseph Stallworth,  the Deacon Ministry, and the New Pleasant Grove family continued to pray for God’s will to be done in finding a Shepherd to lead the church. Deacon Joseph Stallworth and the Deacon Ministry led the congregation under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and Bishop Clifford M. Johnson, Jr., as the overseer.

On December 16, 2009 Reverend Haywood Bradley, Jr., was elected and accepted the Pastorship of the New Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
